General 

St Kilda Music & Poetry Inc. (StKmp Inc.) is a community-based non-profit artistic body, with strong literary and educational interests. The administrators are St Kilda residents, involved professionally in the arts industry and in arts education. The committee (full & honorary members) may or may not be based in Port Phillip and are involved professionally in the arts industry & in arts education.

StKmp Inc. structure includes:

  1. an annual concert (StKmp Community Concert)
  2. nine monthly performances (poetry and music), commencing in 2007 (Feb-Nov inclusive) at Port Phillip EcoCentre, Blessington Street, St Kilda (in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens)
  3. a website dedicated to the business of StKmp Inc. and its promotion
  4. an online journal (in 2008).
A primary focus of StKmp Inc. is to facilitate performance opportunities for artists, at any stage of their career and of any style, and to provide assistance and encouragement for developing artistic talent within a performance, exhibition and writing medium, taking into consideration the influence of digital and other technology on the arts. A primary activity is to promote artists' original works.

Performance information

Taking part in the StKmp Inc. events

Conditions of participation


1.0 Payment of artists

1.1 All payments are dependent upon sponsorships and grants. Grants and sponsorship conditions apply. Payments may be made direct from sponsors to artists, or via the event manager from funds provided by the sponsor..

1.2 In case of a dishonoured, failed or unsuccessful sponsorship or grant, artists affected by this will be notified as soon as the event manager is aware.

1.3 In the case of sponsorships or grants which remain unconfirmed at 2 weeks before the event, the affected artists will be notified. In this case the artist has the option of withdrawing or of performing as scheduled with the possibility of payment from takings at the door or gifts in kind

1.3.1 'Gifts in kind' may be movie tickets, single bottles of wine, chocolates or restaurant dinner vouchers not exceeding a cash value of $30 and may not be exchanged for cash.

1.4 The event manager is responsible for grant applications, procuring sponsorships and facilitating payments. For purposes of grant application and payment, artists are required to provide ABN, name and street address, telephone number, email address, bio, evidence of artistic merit and, if necessary, bank account details to the event manager —.

1.4.1 Such information is released only to a sponsor and only in the instance of direct payment from sponsor, on the proviso that this information may be used solely for payment purpose.

1.5 Artists are required to submit paper-based or email invoice for their performance to the event manager stating the agreed amount and providing the details named in 1.4 above. The invoice may be posted to the StKmp Inc. address (PO Box 1457, St Kilda South 3182) or submitted by hand.

1.6 Any person holding paid positions (such as editor/s of the online literary journal) are required to submit paper-based or email invoice for their role or contribution to the event manager stating the agreed amount and providing the details named in 1.4 above. The invoice may be posted to the StKmp Inc. address (PO Box 1457, St Kilda South 3182) or submitted by hand.

1.7 Artists participating in a students' section or guest/open section of any event are not paid.

1.8 Accounts (payments to artists and other expenditures, income generated by StKmp Inc.) are audited by one person other than persons on committee.

1.9 All StKmp Inc. correspondence is conducted by email. The main correspondent is the event manager. All correspondence and accounts are available to Committee and auditors.

1.10 Participating artists have an obligation to appear at the event and to honour the terms and conditions of the performance agreement.

1.11 StKmp Inc. does not pay commercial performance rates.

1.12 Participation in the annual concert and monthly events is based on the understanding of StKmp Inc. concept and artistic direction - namely sponsorship-based, community involvement, artistic integrity and originality, sharing of artistic and literary knowledge, collaborative support, providing opportunity, artistic appreciation of cultures and languages.

2.0 Sales of artists' products

2.1 Artists may sell their artistic products at the annual festival event (conditions apply). The event organisers do not enter into sales transactions on behalf or artists and do not handle artists' products, sales of products nor collect commissions from sales.

2.1.1 StKmp Inc. offers two artistic exhibition spaces at EcoCentre St Kilda, Blessington Street, and Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House, Liardet Street, Port Melbourne. 2.1.2 Artists are solicited to donate 10% of any sales taking place during an exhibition to EcoCentre Inc. or to Port Melbourne Neighbourhood House.

2.2 Artists may promote their products via the StKmp Inc. website (conditions apply).

2.3 The event organisers and event team do not take responsibility for any sales of products or the products or loss thereof at the event, nor before and after the event.

2.4 Artists are wholly responsible for the quality, value and durability of products sold.

2.5 The event organisers and event team do not take responsibility for any loss of or damage to property of artists at the event.

2.6 Only artists performing at the event in any particular year of performance may sell their products at the event.

3.0 Artistic works performed and/or sold at the annual event and the monthly concerts

3.1 All works performed and/or sold are understood to be the original works of the artists unless declared otherwise by the artists. Artists are requested to declare the original status or otherwise of works performed and/or sold at the event or in connection with the StKmp Inc. event or its website.

3.1.1 The annual concert

The annual concert of the first Sunday afternoon in July is a two-hour showcase of artistic excellence. It comprises a program of classical and contemporary music and poetry. Poets and musicians present their new work and/or their work in progress. The performance content is determined three months before the date of performance in consultation with the event manager. The annual concert may include an exhibition of visual art.

3.1.2 The monthly concerts

The monthly concerts are staged on the first Sunday afternoon of each month from March to June, and August to November. Each concert is a 90-minute program of music and poetry performances, and includes an open/guest section. The focus is on performance of new works of artists and/or their work in progress. The performance content is determined three months prior to the date of performance in consultation with the event manager.

3.2 The event organisers and event team do not take responsibility for any infringements of copyright or breaches of intellectual property and will not enter into any action connected with claims of infringement.

3.3 For purposes of funding application, performing artists are required to submit their work either in hard copy or CD to the event coordinator at the StKmp Inc. mailing address (Connie de Silva, PO Box 1457, St Kilda South 3182) no later than 3 months before the date of performance. Submission details are available from the coordinator by email stkmusicpoetry@yahoo.com.au.

3.4 The monthly event and annual concert incorporates artistic works of students, collectives, and emerging and established artists - particularly new works. Artists may appear under the banner of a group or institution, or as an individual.

3.5 The StKmp Inc. events attract a range of ages and people across the community, therefore works containing language considered vulgar or offensive and expressing racial and/or religious vilification may not be performed and will not be considered for inclusion.

4.0 On offer to artists associated with StKmp Inc.

4.1 leading up to an event

  • advertising in event flyer
  • event listing in relevant print and web-based media
  • artists' email address & profile on StKmp Inc.. website (bio & pic)
  • link from StKmp Inc website to artist's website

4.2 at an event

  • live performance (subject to time limit)
  • launching of a new product (original work) (conditions apply)
  • sale of product at the event
  • StKmp Inc. does not take commission on sales of any products.

4.3 launching of new product

  • launch of artistic product at the event
  • advertising of product in event flyer and other print media, and in web-based media
  • assistance with photography of artists
  • the above-named benefits are sponsored by StKmp Inc.
  • artists launching a product and receiving the above-named benefits are not paid
  • StKmp Inc. does not take commission on sales of any products.

4.4 ongoing after the event

  • artist's performance/event listing in StKmp Inc. website calendar
  • advertising of artist's new products (conditions apply)
  • email address & profile on StKmp Inc. website (bio & pic)

4.5 opportunity to perform at the monthly events

5.0 Sponsorships and grants

5.1 The advertising material, event program and website may carry logos and brand names of sponsors.

5.2 The event venue may carry advertising material and display logos and brand names of sponsors

5.2 The StKmp Inc. website may provide links to websites of sponsors.

5.3 StKmp Inc. does not endorse any products nor any claims made by sponsors.

5.4 Grants and sponsorships conditions apply, for example compliance with the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act.

6.0 Website

6.1 StKmp Inc. website carries information and activities of StKmp Inc. and its participating artists and sponsors

6.1.1 Information on participating artists is for the purposes of promotion of artistic events, services and products participating artists

6.1.2 Information on participating sponsors is for the purposes of promotion of events, services and products of participating sponsors

6.1.3 Information on participating artists and sponsors may be removed on or after 12 months from the date of the annual festival event

6.2 Content of StKmp Inc. website specifically relating to artists and sponsors is obtained from those artists and sponsors (eg photograph, biography, logo, email address, url of website)

6.2.1 Participating artists and sponsors are requested to provide up-to-date and correct information for the website

6.2.2 Participating artists and sponsors are requested to provide promotional material to a submission deadline

6.2.3 Participating artists and sponsors who do not meet a submission deadline may not receive promotion

6.3 StKmp does not source promotional material (such as logos, photographs and bio) on behalf of artists nor sponsors

6.4 StKmp website does not carry material, nor links to material, that may be deemed racially vilifying or pornographic.

Future directions.


(i) Commence in February 2007 a monthly poetry & music afternoon (Sundays 3–5 pm, Feb to Nov) at a Port Phillip location (with feature musician and poet, and an open section), which invites emerging and student artists to perform

(ii) May provide — independently or in consultative collaboration with other community and artistic bodies — professional workshops and short courses to promote artistic development and education, and assistance with furthering artistic endeavour .

(iii) Publish a sponsored online journal of performance pieces, to be launched in September 2008

(iv) May assist with discovering funding opportunities for artists to translate and publish their works and/or travel for artistic development purpose

(v) May include interstate artists.
